Madison Light Artillery
Flag Project
Madison Light Artillery

Madison's flag was captured at Gettysburg 3 July 1863

The flag  has been in Yankee hands ever since.  The Adjutant General of Louisiana National Guard
has sent a letter of intent to the
Illinois Adjutant General requesting the Illinois National Guard
permanently loan the flag to the Louisiana National Guard.  The Illinois National Guard has agreed to
the loan as soon as certain conditions are met.  The conditions are:
The flag has to be conserved by a reputable lab selected by Illinois National Guard Museum
personnel.  The proposed lab is in Maryland.
The flag is to be accessible to the public at all times - It will be housed at Jackson Barracks in
Louisiana.  Jackson Barracks is an excellent museum dedicated to historical preservation.
The flag has to be insured
The flag needs your help before it comes home to Louisiana after 142 years

Neither the Louisiana nor the Illinois National Guard has the needed funds to conserve the flag.  The
most important issue on their minds at this time is  the
War on Terrorism!!!!! It can only come home if it
is conserved for future generations.  A rough estimate is $10,000 and we may need to cover other
expenses such as the insurance and transportation.
Please help!!

905 people recently signed a petition asking the governor of Illinois to return the flag to the state of
Louisiana.  Illinois is no longer the stumbling block for the homecoming.
It is us!  The flag will remain
in Illinois hands until we, the Confederate Family, donate enough money for the conservation project.
We should easily have enough money if each petitioner donates a
minimum of $15 a person.  In other
words, we are asking the Confederate Family to put their money where their mouth is and bring this
priceless artifact home.  This is one of those times when deeds speak louder than words!  Please
donate today.

We are also asking that Confederate Reenactors, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Sons of
Confederate Veterans, Civil War Round Tables, Order of  Confederate Rose, and other like minded
groups donate to this worthy cause.  We are seeking donations from both individual members and
groups.

We also ask that you pass this on to other like minded individuals and groups who may be able to
help.
Many Thanks To:

Major General Bennett C. Landreneau and Brigadier General Randal E. Thomas for working in
cooperation with each other on this flag project while having the hardest jobs one can imagine,
sending our citizen soldiers to a dangerous battle zone to defend OUR well being.  Their desire and
efforts of getting our  soldiers safely home far outweighs our desire to get our flag home.  We know
that hardest of all for these two, is dealing with those who do not make it safely home.  Please keep
these two men in your prayers!!!!

Major Mark  Whitlock and his predecessors at the Illinois National Guard.  Our flags are actually in
better condition than most, if not all, of the Illinois War Between the States flags.  Major Whitlock is the
epitome of historical correctness.  He is very eager to get the Confederate flags in his care loaned
out to Southern states so that they will be conserved for future generations. He realizes that it will be
many years before Illinois will have the financial resources to conserve our flags and that it may be
too late by then. His predecessors had the foresight to care for these flags, knowing that it would
probably never be expedient politically to properly conserve OUR SOUTHERN flags.

The Future:

We realize that we will probably receive more donations than we need for this project because
modern Confederates, just like their ancestors, truly do let their deeds speak louder than their
words.   Therefore, we will offer Jackson Barracks the excess funds for future maintenance of their
Confederate Artifacts or we will roll the money over to bring
another Confederate Flag home.
